How Shopify costs work in 2026

Shopify is a subscription plus a payment-processing rate, not a marketplace commission. On the Basic plan, US merchants pay $29/month (annual billing) and 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale through Shopify Payments. Grow is $79 and 2.7% + 30¢; Advanced is $299 and 2.5% + 30¢.

If you use a third-party gateway such as PayPal or Stripe as your primary processor, Shopify adds an extra 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, or 0.6% on Advanced on top of the gateway’s own fee. That is why most stores use Shopify Payments when it is available.

Where the money goes on a $50 order

LineBasicGrowAdvanced
Shopify Payments fee$1.75$1.65$1.55
Monthly plan (at 200 orders)$0.15$0.40$1.50
Platform cost per order$1.90$2.05$3.05

At low volume, Basic is almost always the cheapest. The higher plans become worthwhile when their lower processing rate and extra features save more than the subscription difference — usually somewhere above $25,000/month in revenue.

The real comparison is not Shopify vs Etsy

Shopify’s fees are lower than Etsy’s or Amazon’s, but Shopify does not bring buyers. A store with no traffic has no revenue, and paid acquisition can easily cost 15–30% of revenue. Compare the total cost of getting a sale, not just the platform fee:

  • Marketplace: higher fee, built-in demand, less control over the customer.
  • Shopify: lower fee, you own the customer, but you pay for traffic and apps.
  • Hybrid: marketplace for discovery, Shopify for repeat purchases and brand.
The app creep: a typical store runs $50–$200/month in apps. At 200 orders, $200 in apps adds $1.00 to every order — roughly 2% of a $50 sale. Audit apps quarterly and kill anything that does not pay for itself.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take per sale in 2026?

On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, Shopify charges 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale. Grow is 2.7% + 30¢ and Advanced is 2.5% + 30¢. If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify adds 2%, 1%, or 0.6% respectively on top of the gateway’s own fee.

Is the monthly plan included in the per-sale fee?

No. The plan is a fixed monthly subscription ($29 Basic, $79 Grow, $299 Advanced at annual billing). The calculator spreads it across your monthly orders so you can see the true per-order cost.

Why does Shopify charge an extra fee for third-party gateways?

Shopify wants merchants to use Shopify Payments. If you process payments outside it, Shopify charges an additional percentage: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, and 0.6% on Advanced. You still pay the gateway’s own processing fee.

What about apps and themes?

Apps are optional but common — $50 to $200 per month is typical for email, reviews, upsells, and analytics. Enter your monthly app spend to see the impact. Premium themes are a one-time cost and are not included.
